COACH OF THE YEAR

Ryan Cumbee, Marmion
A former Providence assistant, Cumbee ably replaced Dean Branstetter, who had been the only coach in Marmion history while building the program into a state power in less than a decade.

One season after the Cadets produced four state place-winners – including two champions – in Class 2A, Cumbee presided over the same result when the team shifted to 3A, the state’s largest class. Guiding a lineup that starts seven freshmen, he also helped the Cadets to the program’s first berth in the dual team state tournament. Marmion faces Minooka in a quarterfinal at 11 a.m. Saturday.
