Geneva Underground Playhouse closes

GENEVA – The nonprofit Geneva Underground Playhouse has closed, citing financial problems.

“The playhouse has fallen victim to financial concerns and was unable to raise the money needed to sustain the theater,” playhouse board President Eric Prebys said in a statement.

Since May 2009, Geneva Underground Playhouse had been in the basement of the Urban Grille restaurant at 524 W. State St. in downtown Geneva.

The first playhouse-sponsored program was produced before the theater opened. The show, “Inherit the Wind,” was produced in fall 2008, co-sponsored by the Kane County Bar Association, as a celebration of the association’s 150th anniversary.

It sold out two shows in the rotunda of the historical Old Courthouse on Third Street in Geneva. The closing of the 50-space theater was by mutual agreement between the theater and its landlord, Joe Stanton.

“Without Joe’s generosity and help, we would not have survived as long as we did,” Steve Lord, playhouse treasurer, said in a statement.

About half of the theater’s seats were loaned by the Urban Grille, which also donated its banquet room for rehearsals when possible.
