Why he was selected: Stanko averaged 12 points and eight rebounds in three games at the 4A South Elgin Regional

St. Charles North senior forward Justin Stanko elevated his play during last week's 4A South Elgin Regional, helping the North Stars roll to victories against South Elgin (quarterfinals) and St. Charles East (semifinals) before falling to Larkin in the regional championship game. A Loyola soccer recruit, Stanko earned St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week accolades for his balanced play as an inside scorer and rebounder. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley spoke with Stanko about his week. The following is an edited transcript:

Coach [Tom Poulin] has said you made some plays during the week where he stopped in film session and said 'That's how we want to do it.' Where has this stretch come from?
I think just before the game, [you] mentally focus. Doing all the right things on the court. We're just playing together, and that's what made me look good out there.
