GENEVA – Geneva officials Monday released updated information regarding the city’s now-defunct red-light camera program they say points to its success.
Geneva’s two red-light cameras, at Randall Road and Fargo Boulevard and Randall Road and Williamsburg Avenue, were deactivated Saturday after the three-year county permit for them expired.
The cameras had been in place since March 9, 2010. Randall Road is a county-controlled road.
“The data tells me that people are being more cautious at the intersections,” said Julie Nash, Geneva police patrol operations commander.
According to the red-light camera justification report from the Geneva Police Department released Monday, there were 115 accidents at the intersection of Randall and Fargo from 2007 to Saturday. That includes one accident this year. Last year, there were 11 accidents at the intersection, a drop from 15 in 2011.
From 2007 to Saturday, 6,550 red-light running citations were issued at the Randall-Fargo intersection, including 253 so far this year, 1,350 citations last year, 1,760 in 2011 and 3,153 in 2010.
Randall and Williamsburg experienced a similar accident history, according to the report. From 2007 to Saturday, there were 89 accidents at the intersection. There have been no accidents at the intersection this year, and there were eight in 2012, which is up from four in 2011, but down from 18 in 2010.
From 2007 to Saturday, 7,093 red-light running citations were issued at the Randall-Williamsburg intersection, including 357 this year, 1,736 citations last year, 1,816 in 2011 and 3,121 in 2010.
“The purpose of the technology when installed was to make these intersections safer, and the data proves that,” Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said.
Bob McQuillan, Burns’ opponent in the Geneva mayoral race, disagreed with that assessment.
“The cameras don’t stop them from speeding,” he said. “If people have bad driving habits, they will have bad driving habits whether the cameras are there or not.”
The removal of Geneva’s red-light cameras leaves only one red-light camera in the Tri-Cities area – at the intersection of Route 31 and West Main Street in St. Charles. That light does not have to be removed because West Main Street is a state road.
