Saturday's Prep Roundup: Wheaton Academy's Ruggles shoots his way to King of the Hill
PEORIA – Wheaton Academy sophomore guard Josh Ruggles won the IHSA King of the Hill 3-point shooting competition on Saturday at Carver Arena in Peoria.
Ruggles, who on Friday won the 3A 3-point shooting title, defeated the champions of classes 4A, 2A and 1A. Ruggles and 2A champion Dayton Ince of Kewanee both made 11 of 15 3-pointers, forcing a best-of-10 shootout, of which Ruggles canned six and Ince hit four.
Ruggles made 13 of 15 3-pointers in Thursday's preliminary round and Friday's 3A competition. Factoring in his 11 of 15 Saturday's regular round, Ruggles hit 37 of 45 3-point shots over the three-day competition.
The Three-Point Showdown coincided with the 3A and 4A state championship games, which were contested this weekend in Peoria.
St. Charles North 2, Evanston 0: At Evanston, Alyssa Brandt scored a goal and also assisted on Alex Gage's goal as the North Stars (2-0) prevailed in nonconference action. Kenzie Rose and Jenny Barr also were credited with assists.
St. Francis 2, West Chicago 0: At West Chicago, Kaity Bucaro and Taylor VanThournout scored in the nonconference win for St. Francis.
GIRLS WATER POLO
St. Charles North Tournament: Host North defeated Hoffman Estates, Andrew and Maine West. to win the tournament. Nicole Guyett scored six goals and Sarah Stern added four goals and five assists in the 14-2, championship win against Maine West.
BOYS WATER POLO
Lincoln-Way North Tournament: St. Charles North went 1-1-1 to finish third. North got five goals apiece from Nick Traxler and John Pretet.
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Northern Illinois Big 12 Meet: At Sterling, Kaneland racked up 107 points to win the 10-team meet, finishing 40 points ahead of runners-up Geneseo.
Nathan Kucera won the 400 meters for Kaneland in 52.99 seconds while the Knights Dylan Nauert took the 60-meter hurdles in 8.78 seconds.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Northern Illinois Big 12 Meet: Kaneland finished second out of 11 teams as the Knights' 100 points were 10 behind champion Yorkville. Kaneland's Lauren Zick finished first in the 60-meter dash in 7.92 seconds. Zick also won the 200 meter dash in 26.62 seconds.
Byron Indoor Classic: Burlington Central finished runners-up to champion Machesney Park Harlem. Burlington Central's 4x800 relay team won in 10:10.95 while Aurora Central Catholic's Lisa Rodriguez won the 55-meter dash in 7.49 seconds and the 200 dash in 26.67 seconds.
DeKalb Tournament: Geneva won the tournament and got championships from Melanie Burkhardt at No. 1 singles and Maddie Jones and Tatum Drury at No. 3 doubles.
