Rail repairs in April will halt Route 47 traffic in Elburn

ELBURN – Traffic on Route 47 in Elburn will come to a halt at the railroad tracks in April, as maintenance work on the Union Pacific tracks will force drivers to seek alternate routes from April 5 to 10.

John Nevenhoven, the village's superintendent of Public Works, brought up the item at Monday's village board meeting. He said that the village received a letter from Union Pacific stating that the crossing will be closed from 9 a.m. April 5 to 3 p.m. April 10 for "routine maintenance."

Nevenhoven said drivers can use First Street in Elburn for local traffic.

"They can get around, but it's going to be crowded," he said. "that street was not made for that much traffic, but we're going to have to deal with it."

The official detour will be to take Route 38 to Meredith Road and head south to Keslinger. Other possible detours are at Pouley Road or Harley Road. Nevenhoven said that while the repair work will be an inconvenience, he is pleased that safety of the railroad tracks is a priority.
