Geneva baseball ready for warm-up in J'ville

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

The Geneva baseball team is set to travel to downstate Jacksonville this weekend for a season-opening slate of three games in two days.

Weather.com forecasts call for temperatures in the upper 40s, about 10 degrees warmer than the highs expected in the Tri-Cities.

"You can't beat least year, though; 75 degrees," Vikings coach Matt Hahn said. "I was wearing short sleeves on Friday night. But you deal with it."

To be sure, Geneva's 2012 retreat to the central Illinois weather belt wasn't a particular advantage to leaving home. A year later, however, the Vikings are antsy to head south, where they'll face Jacksonville on Friday and Danville and Buffalo Grove on Saturday.

"Obviously it's not going to be as warm as I'd like it to be," Vikings senior right-hander Andy Honiotes said, "but it'll be good enough."

And even better for Honiotes next spring. He's a Miami (Fla.) recruit.
