ST. CHARLES – The host. St. Charles East boys water polo team rallied from a one-goal deficit entering Thursday’s fourth quarter to edge St. Charles North, 10-9.

Saints goaltender Nick Fagen made the last of his 11 saves with about 25 seconds remaining, helping East preserve the win after it trailed, 7-6, entering the final seven minutes.

“The boys had amazing defense and they really just stepped up in the fourth quarter,” East coach Jaclyn Weber said. “We were back and forth, pretty much even the entire game.”

Mitch Phelps scored six goals for East, outdueling North’s Justin Timmons, who had five.

“He led us in every sense of the word,” North Stars coach Chris Cloy said of Timmons.

East improved to 12-4, while North fell to 4-6-1.

“East got some momentum in the fourth quarter, took the lead,” Cloy said. “We had a shot to tie the game up ... and weren’t able to capitalize.”

The Saints grabbed a 10-8 lead with about 2:30 remaining before North drew to within a goal with 1:07 to go.

Along with the rest of the defense, Fagen stood tall down the stretch.

“He’s just amazing,” said Weber, the Saints’ first-year coach.
