Obscenities and other non-roadwork statements appeared on electronic road signs north of St. Charles this week along Route 25 after an unauthorized third party tampered with them, officials said.
Various government agencies – including the St. Charles Police Department, the Wayne Police Department and the Illinois Department of Transportation – heard about the inappropriate messages, which an IDOT spokesman described as unfortunate.
The signs were put up by a subcontractor of Magellan Midstream Partners for routine maintenance procedures on its pipeline system near Route 25 and Army Trail Road, Magellan spokesman Bruce Heine said in an email. He said traffic was reduced to one lane for the work.
“In compliance with Illinois DOT regulations, road signs were installed in the area by a subcontractor,” Heine wrote. “After the maintenance was complete and the signs were moved away from the highway, an unauthorized third party tampered with the signs.”
Officials with the Wayne and St. Charles police departments said the unauthorized messages included obscenities and promoted the group seemingly behind it.
Heine said the subcontractor has removed the signs from the area.
