CHICAGO HEIGHTS – The St. Charles North boys volleyball team won a tournament championship for the second straight weekend, claiming the Marian Catholic Tournament on Saturday with a championship match triumph against Morton.
North beat Morton, 25-21, 25-21, in the final after topping Homewood-Flossmoor, 25-16, 25-20, in the semifinal round.
For the tournament, Johnathan Orech had 28 kills and 14 digs, Pat Misiewicz dished 75 assists and Jack Harbaugh had 20 kills and six blocks to pace North.
The North Stars improve to 10-1 on the season.
St. Charles East Invitational: Geneva defeated St. Charles East to take third place in the tournament, which was won by Zion-Benton.
Sam Pulcanio (48 digs), Luke Spicer (43 kills) and Tom DeBruyne (101 assists) paced the Saints for the tournament.
Kaneland 1, Sterling 0: At Maple Park, Curtis Thorson threw a complete game shutout as Kaneland (3-6) won the Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover. Josh Cohrs had the Knights' lone hit and RBI.
St. Charles North 12, Rolling Meadows 8: At St. Charles, Nick Drawant drove in three runs and Cory Wright and Joe Kuczek each drove in two to pace North to a nonconference win.
Cary-Grove 3, Burlington Central 1: At Burlington, Blake Alexander and Josh Lung had two hits apiece but Central (3-2) fell short after Cary-Grove took the lead with a three-run top of the sixth.
Tuscola Invite: Aurora Central Catholic defeated Salt Fork, 11-5, behind a three-run home run from Phil Schuetz and home runs by Matt Miller and Jake McCarthy.
St. Charles East 4-14, Fremd 2-2: At Palatine, St. Charles East swept Fremd in the nonconference doubleheader.
In Game 1, Alex Latoria went 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs. Haley Beno (3-2) earned the win with a complete game effort. Kate Peterburs had three hits and four RBIs and Katie Kolb added two hits and three RBIs in the second game, while Latoria was the winning pitcher for the Saints (6-3).
Kaneland 17, Batavia 1 (5 inn): At Batavia, Kaneland scored 11 runs in the first inning to dominate the nonconference win. Winning pitcher Elissa Eckert and Paige Kuefler were among numerous players to have big offensive days for the Knights (5-1).
Burlington Central 15-10, Libertyville 5-3: At Libertyville, Central's Brooke Gaylord pitched a combined 13 innings to help Central sweep. Gaylord also had three hits in each game and Bekah Harnish added two hits in each game for the Rockets (8-1).
St. Edward 4, Rosary 3: At Elgin, Sam Phelps went 2 for 3 with two doubles but Rosary (2-3) fell short against St. Ed.
St. Charles North 2, Libertyville 0: At Libertyville, Alex Gage scored two goals, both on Alyssa Brandt assists, to lift North (7-1) to the win. Shelby Stitz made four saves for the North Stars.
Kaneland 1, Rosary 1: At the West Aurora tournament, Rosary and Kaneland tied at 1. Lizzie Kelley scored on a Molly Piech assist for the Royals (3-1-2). Kiandra Powell (0-2-1) scored the first goal of the season for Kaneland.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Holmes Invite: Kaneland's 4x800 relay team of Amanda Lesak, Jessica Kucera, Victoria Clinton and Sydney Strang won in 10:17.50 as part of the Knights' team title. Rosary placed fifth in the 13-team event.
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
United Township Kiwanis Invitational: Kaneland won the 12-team event, paced by a 4x100 relay triumph for the Knights' Brandon Bishop, Brandon Cottier, Dylan Nauert and Ben Barnes in 43.85 seconds. Conor Johnson won the 800 meter run for the Knights in 2:02.58.
Downers Grove Invite: Batavia placed second behind Downers Grove North. Ryan Sterling (No. 2 singles) had the lone win for the Bulldogs against Downers Grove North.
Hoffman Estates Triangular: Geneva defeated Hoffman Estates and Metea Valley, 4-1. John Potts and Nick McCarty each had a win at No. 1 singles for the Vikings.
BOYS WATER POLO
Naperville North Tournament: St. Charles North defeated Schaumburg to take fifth place at the tournament. John Preter and Kyle Gannon scored five goals apiece for North (6-9-1).
