Cougars right-hander Lendy Castillo is set to start Monday's series opener against Clinton, taking the mound on his 24th birthday.
Acquired by the parent Cubs from the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft, Castillo made 13 appearances for the Cubs last season, compling a 7.88 ERA while striking out 13 in 16 innings.
Castillo began his professional career as a shortstop and transitioned to the mound when his hitting struggles persisted. He's entering his fourth season as a pitcher.
"He hasn't been pitching a whole lot for many years compared to most of our guys" Cougars pitching coach Ron Villone said, "but he's got a great arm and we're going to try to mold that arm into something special."
