Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney is expected to have the stitches removed from his left knee later this week. Barney landed on the 15-day disabled list after he received five stitches to close a deep cut, which occurred when he chased down a foul ball in the Cubs’ final spring training game last month.
Once the stiches are removed, Barney will go on a rehab assignment. When asked if that rehab will be in Kane County, Barney said "that's the plan."
Cubs officials have cited the proximity between Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and Wrigley Field in scheduling rehab assignments as an advantage from the time the Cougars and Cubs signed a two-year player-development contract in September.
Cougars infielder Wes Darvill initially was slated to begin the season with Triple-A Iowa when Barney's DL stint created the need for corresponding roster moves.
