Ode to April 8

Baseball fans nationwide knew this April 8 as the 39th anniversary of the night the Atlanta Braves' Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's then-Major League Baseball career home run record.

Turned out it won't be a bad day for seamheads in Chronicle Country to remember, either.

Pitching on his 24th birthday Monday, Cougars right-hander Lendy Castillo was in line to get the victory in the series opener against Clinton before late bullpen struggles. Castillo, who opened last season with the parent Cubs, still looked sharp in a no-decision, limiting the LumberKings to one run and three hits in six innings. Kane County went on to win 6-5, in 10 innings, snapping a four-game skid to start 2013.

On the preps side, St. Charles North defeated Metea Valley, 5-2, on coach Todd Genke's birthday. Check out our Preps 24/7 blog for more on Cory Wright's pitching performance in that game.
