St. Charles teens invited to participate in Youth Police Academy

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department will host its first Youth Police Academy this summer.

Set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10 to 14, the academy intends to showcase careers in police and fire work, encourage teamwork and grow self-esteem.

Classes include steps to becoming a police officer and firefighter, personal safety and self-defense, Internet safety, bullying and crime scene evidence collection. The class also will spend a day at the Kane County Judicial Center for classes led by officials from the state’s attorney’s office.

With funding by the St. Charles Youth Commission, participants will be certified in CPR and first aid by the St. Charles Fire Department for free.

The class will be limited to the first 25 registrants and is open to children ages 13 to 16. Participants must be a St. Charles resident or attend St. Charles School District 303. Preference will be given to residents within the city limits.

Registration packets are available at the St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles; and at the main offices at St. Charles East High School, 1020 Dunham Road, St. Charles, and St. Charles North High School, 255 Red Gate Road, St. Charles.

The registration deadline is May 28.
