Cardiac win clinches Clinton series

Call it a winning streak.

The Cougars' 6-5 victory against Clinton on Tuesday was their second victory in a row following four season-opening losses. Panic never was an issue during the skid, players said.

"We knew, 'Hey, if we lose this early, it's OK as long as we battle,' " Cougars right fielder Bijan Rademacher said. "Because we've got 130-something games to come back. It's a long season."

After the Cougars were unable to hold a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth, third baseman Jeimer Candelario won the game with a run-scoring, opposite-field single to left.

"It's kind of the same start as we had last year in [Short-A] Boise, you know," Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. "Struggled early and always had that fight in us. And it's starting to show now. Confidence is building a little bit, and we're starting to get the big hits when we need them."

The Cougars will try for the series sweep when they host the LumberKings at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
