Middle school students receive writing awards

The American Association of University Women – the Batavia-Geneva-St. Charles branch – recognized 18 students from Tri-City middle schools for original fiction writing, non-fiction writing and poetry.

The students were awarded at a ceremony and reception April 4 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles.

The association’s Tri-Cities branch has the student-writing contest annually.

In the category of eighth-grade fiction writing, Kayla Little of Rotolo Middle School won first prize; Henry Feldhaus of St. Peter’s Middle School won second prize; and Shelby Balogh of Wredling Middle School won third prize.

In the category for eighth- grade non-fiction writing, Megha Nayyar of Wredling won first prize; Jody Holta of Wredling won second prize; and Connor Heavington of Wredling won third prize.

In the category of eighth-grade poetry, Roxanne Vermaas of Rotolo won first prize; Mary Margaret Murray of Rotolo won second prize; and Breanne S. Warner of Haines Middle School won third prize.

In the category for seventh-grade fiction writing  Abigail Weiss of Rotolo won first prize; Shelby Tsakiris of Geneva Middle School North won second prize; and Abby Behnken of Rotolo won third prize.

In the category for seventh-grade non-fiction, Grace Westerhoff of Wredling won first  prize; Mary Beirne of Haines Middle School won second prize; and Henry Brady, of Wredling won third prize.

In the category of seventh-grade poetry, Jason Hinds of Thompson Middle School won first prize; Lindsey Haugen of Wredling won second prize; and Andrew Groomes of Wredling won third prize.

The ceremony keynote speaker was Marnie Mamminga – journalist, educator and author of the novel “Return to Wake Robin.”
