Hurry up and wait

I've photographed about two dozen election nights in my career, and – every time – I have a mixture of dread and fascination with the night. There is a lot of "hurry up and wait" as election results come and I try to be at more than one place at a time. With the digital system that's been in place the last few years, election results come in much faster than the over four hours I've waited in the past.

This past Tuesday, I spent most of my night with Ray Rogina, as he waited to find out if he would become the next mayor of St. Charles. After just 45 minutes after the polls closed, we had a majority of the results and Rogina had taken a strong lead.

Most of the night, Rogina was doing laps around the private party room at The Office in St. Charles, talking, laughing and hugging his friends and supporters. I finally saw him sit down once to take phone calls just before he declared victory.
