Ribbon-cutting event to celebrate opening of pedestrian-bike crossing at Red Gate Bridge

ST. CHARLES – The City of St. Charles, in conjunction with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the pedestrian/bicycle crossing of the Red Gate Bridge at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4, according to a news release issued by the city. The ceremony will take place at the west entrance of the crossing off of Route 31, and will include brief remarks before the official opening. All are welcome and encouraged to wear running shoes or bring a bike and participate.

The pedestrian bridge forms the lower deck of the Red Gate Bridge and connects to the Fox River Trail on the east side of the river. On the west, it joins a path that feeds into the Great Western Trail. It also links the Kane County Fox River Bluff West Forest Preserve and Kane County Dog Park off Route 31 to the eastside preserve off Route 25.

“The completion of the pedestrian bridge will help bring the west side and east side communities together. The Forest Preserve District is always working toward expanding trail connections, so we’re excited to see this project completed,” John Hoscheit, president of the Forest Preserve District, said in the release. “We truly appreciate our partnership with the City of St. Charles on this project.”

“Now people will be able to cross the river and access both forest preserves and the network of trails to run, ride their bikes or walk their dogs,” St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte said in the release. “The river will no longer divide east and west.”

Construction of the $30 million Red Gate Bridge began in August 2011 and was completed on time and within budget. The roadway opened to traffic Dec. 15, 2012.

Anyone planning to attend the ribbon cutting is asked to RSVP at 630-762-7097 or via email at so plans can be made to accommodate all who wish to attend.  Parking is available at St. Charles North High School, 225 Red Gate Road. For information, visit the project website at
