Cougars fall in 10 innings

GENEVA – For the fifth time in their first 12 games this season, the Kane County Cougars went beyond regulation, but they suffered a fifth consecutive loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits in a 9-8, 10-inning final on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Lendy Castillo started for the Cougars (4-8) but coughed up a five-spot in the top of the second. Jesse Wierzbicki tripled to start the inning and scored on a hit from Roberto Pena. Ariel Ovando smacked a three-run homer before Terrell Joyce doubled and scored to put the River Bandits (9-3) up by five.

Willson Contreras helped the Cougars start the comeback as he cracked a three-run homer off Quad Cities starter Colton Cain. Cain allowed four more runs in the third as the Cougars grabbed their first advantage. Dan Vogelbach and Rock Shoulders each knocked in a tally while Shoulders scored on a wild pitch. Marco Hernandez added a run-scoring knock in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cougars an 8-5 cushion.

Justin Amlung didn't give up a run in his first two innings of relief but allowed two to score in the top of the seventh. In the eighth, Amlung surrendered the tying score as Teoscar Hernandez doubled Terrell Joyce to the dish.

Two innings later, Joyce cracked a two-bagger off Stephen Perakslis (0-2) to put the River Bandits on top. John Neely (S, 2) worked a perfect bottom of the 10th after Mike Hauschild (1-0) tossed four scoreless frames.
