Prep Roundup: Coomes, Misner help St. Charles North baseball to win

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North’s Riley Coomes reached base three times and Tim Misner had a two-run double Monday as the North Stars baseball team knocked off South Elgin, 6-4, in Upstate Eight Conference crossover play.

North (8-7, 4-3 UEC River) prevailed despite being outhit, 11-8. The North Stars threw three pitchers at the Storm, with PJ O’Brien (12/3 IP, one unearned run) earning the win in relief of Sawyer Chambers.

The makeup game, which had been rescheduled for May 3, was moved to Monday when North’s original foe for Monday, York, had to reschedule, North coach Todd Genke said.

The York game will be played today in St. Charles, weather-permitting.

Marmion 7, Aurora Christian 4: At Aurora, Marmion’s Josh Meyers and Brady Roberts each drove in two runs and Alex Troop improved to 2-0 on the mound for Marmion (5-4, 2-1 Suburban Christian Conference Blue).

The Eagles scored all four of their runs in the top of the sixth.

Chicago Christian 11, Aurora Central Catholic 0 (6 inn.): At Palos Heights, ACC (16-2, 7-1 SCC Gold) saw its 15-game winning streak snapped emphatically.

Hampshire 5, Burlington Central 1: At Hampshire, Josh Lung doubled for Central (5-5) but the Rockets were out-hit, 11-5, and committed three errors while the Whip-Purs were errorless.

Bartlett 2, St. Charles North 1: At St. Charles, Delaney Olinger had the only RBI for North (7-4, 4-2 UEC River) and Abby Howlett went 1 for 3 with a run scored for the North Stars. Sabrina Rabin (6-2) pitched a complete game for North.

St. Charles East 3, Elgin 1: At Elgin, East’s Haley Beno threw a complete-game, three-hitter while striking out 14 and added two hits offensively to lift the Saints (12-3, 6-2 UEC River).

Rosary 11, Guerin 2: At Aurora, Emma Molenhouse struck out 12 batters and Kates Groom, Sam Phelps and Victoria Phipps each had two hits apiece for Rosary (4-5, 3-2 SCC).

St. Edward 12, Wheaton Academy 2 (5 inn.): At Elgin, Wheaton Academy (2-5, 2-3 SCC Gold) was unable to recover after surrendering a first-inning grand slam. The Warriors’ Jess Bosse had two hits.

Geneva 2, Streamwood 0 (25-18, 25-21): At Geneva, Nathan Jesko had 18 assists and Mason Stierwalt had seven kills for Geneva in the UEC River match. Middle hitter Jordan Hunter added five kills and three blocks.

St. Francis 2, Joliet Catholic 1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-15): At Wheaton, St. Francis (18-5) won behind the offensive firepower of Pat Flood (12 kills), Jeff Jendryk (eight kills, two blocks) and Greg Churney (six kills, four service points). Robert Smith added 31 assists and eight service points.

St. Charles North 7, Conant 5: At St. Charles, Nicole Guyett had four goals and four steals and Sarah Stern added two goals and three steals for North (19-5).

IHSA Shabbona Lake Sectional: At Shabbona, a boat from Indian Creek caught the lone keeper of the day in a frustrating tournament that included seven Chronicle-area schools. Batavia caught a “short fish” – shy of the 12-inch minimum – earlier in the day, Marmion coach Joe Large said, but only Indian Creek earned a berth to the state tournament in May.

This marked the first time in five Shabbona Lake sectionals that fewer than three boats moved on.
