ST. CHARLES – Ray Rogina is encouraging interested 3rd Ward residents to apply for the aldermanic seat he soon will vacate to serve as St. Charles' mayor, according to a city news release.
"There are many good people who have experience in serving their community," Rogina said in the release. "I encourage any and all interested persons from the 3rd Ward to apply for the open position."
State statute requires the mayor to make a recommended appointment to fill the vacant seat within 60 days after the vacancy occurs. The City Council then must act on the recommendation within 30 days. By those requirements, the new alderman should be appointed by Aug. 5, according to the city.
Rogina is committed to involving City Council members and city administrator Brian Townsend in the selection process. Rogina will select a sub-committee of aldermen to review the credentials of all candidates and narrow the pool to three persons. Those candidates will be interviewed by the entire City Council.
"It is my hope that we can work cooperatively to reach a consensus on the best candidate to serve the people of St. Charles and the residents of Ward 3," Rogina said in the release.
Those interested must submit a letter of interest and resume to Rogina by 4:30 p.m. May 17. Materials can be left at City Hall; mailed to 2 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174; or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
• Be a qualified elector of the municipality. • Have resided in the municipality at least one year next preceding the election or appointment. • Not be in arrears in the payment of a tax or other indebtedness due to the municipality or been convicted in any court of any infamous crime, bribery, perjury or other felony. • Reside in the ward that the person seeks to represent at least one year next preceding the election or appointment.

The individual appointed to the aldermanic seat will serve until a candidate can be elected during the April 2015 general municipal election.
