ELBURN – Funeral arrangements have been established for Caitlyn Phillips, a 13-year-old girl who died last week after she was struck by a car while inline rollerskating in the village Friday afternoon.

A funeral to celebrate her life will begin at 11 a.m. The Rev. Russ Hurst, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Blackberry Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name. Checks may be made to the “Caitlyn Phillips Memorial” and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, 60119. You can also deposit direct into a account set up in her name at Old Second Bank, 749 N. Main St., Elburn. Memorial tributes may also be forwarded to the P.O. Box or online at Arrangements were handled with care by Conley Funeral Home.

Phillips, of Elburn, a seventh-grade student at Kaneland Harter Middle School, died Friday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

According to a release from the Elburn Police Department, Phillips was inline rollerskating and heading east on East Reader Street approaching North Third Street, about three blocks east of Route 47, when she collided with a vehicle, driven by a woman, 34, of Elburn, which was traveling north on Third Street.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m.

Elburn Police said witnesses reported that the girl had been rollerskating downhill, and appeared unable to stop before entering the intersection, where she collided with the left front corner of the woman's vehicle.

Phillips was taken by ambulance to Delnor, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Elburn Police said no charges have been filed in the incident, and it remains under investigation by Elburn Police and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Kaneland School District 302 issued a statement Saturday informing district families of Phillips' death and extending "deepest condolences and sympathy to Caity's family and friends."

The statement, signed by Julie Ann Fuchs, assistant superintendent for business, said Harter Middle School had met to "implement the post-crisis plan to support students and staff that will be impacted by this tragic news."

The district would provide additional counselors and staff "to provide support as students and staff grieve," Fuchs said.
