Kane County boys track meet: brisk all-around

Inclement weather led to the cancellations of several athletic events Friday, but Burlington Central senior sprinter Ryan Olsen had a hunch the Kane County boys track and field meet would go off unhinged.

It had to, right? Central was hosting the meet for the first time in the event's 95-year history, after all.

"Some of the guys were saying it was going to get canceled, but I'm like, 'You never want to say that,' " Olsen said. "So I have the mentality that it never gets canceled and it never surprises me."

Olsen won the title in the 400 meters as part of a tidy meet won by Kaneland.

Geneva girls track coach Peter Raak – also a boys assistant – was among those on hand. Raak had that luxury when the Upstate Eight Conference girls meet at Elgin was canceled earlier Friday. No makeup date is planned, as sectionals loom next week.

"We never left for Elgin. We got the news in at least enough time," Raak said. "We had a little time trial at our place just with our kids, just kind of shake out their legs, because they were ready to go. And then [I] came out here."
