Shoulders tapped as Cubs' Minor League Player of the Month

The parent Chicago Cubs have named Cougars infielder/designated hitter Rock Shoulders the organization's Minor League Player of the Month for April.

Shoulders batted .370 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 22 April games. Thirteen of his 30 hits went for extra bases.

"I'm just blessed to be named the Minor League Player of the Month. It's always an honor to get something like that," Shoulders said before the opener of Friday's doubleheader against Bowling Green. "I'm just blessed to have the ability to play the game I've been playing in. Hopefully I can keep it going for the rest of the year. Help my team get some wins."

Traditionally hitting fifth in the Cougars' lineup, Shoulders has batted two spots behind slugging first baseman Dan Vogelbach, who has blasted four home runs since April 22. Aiming to get Shoulders more innings defensively, the Cougars plan to play him in left field about once a week. Shoulders also has been taking ground balls at third base recently.

Shoulders, the Midwest League Player of the Week for April 15-21, was drafted by the Cubs in the 25th round in 2011.
