Cougars Short Hops

Turnstile report

Monday’s crowd of 6,586 pushed the Cougars’ season attendance total to 74,298 through 18 home games. Kane County attracted 70,975 fans over the same span last season.

Sight seen

The left field and right field berms were busier than usual as schoolchildren descended on Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for an Ozzie’s Reading Club matinee. May 15 and 16 games against Peoria are the lone remaining “Rise & Grind” or “Wake & Rake” 11 a.m. matinees of the first half.

Cubs celebrity watch

Cubs assistant general manager Randy Bush was at the ballpark.

Cubs brass will be excited because

Slugging first baseman Dan Vogelbach drove in two more runs, giving him RBIs in seven of the past nine games.

Cubs brass will cringe because

Starting pitcher Lendy Castillo, who pitched with the Cubs last year, scuffled again. He has allowed 27 runs – 24 earned – in 23 innings this season.

The closer

There’s something to be said for bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning when you trail by 10 runs in the fifth. The Cougars did just that in their bid for a seventh straight victory, but a 5-1 homestand still isn’t shabby. It could be the turning point for a postseason push.
