GENEVA – For 30 years, the Miller family has fixed shoes, purses, baseball mitts, luggage and riding boots at their shop, Geneva Shoe Repair, 15 N. Fourth St., Geneva.
The late Robert Miller started the shoe repair shop, and for the past 19 years, it has been owned by his son and wife, Gary, 56, and Lauren Miller, 53, of South Elgin.
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the repair shop will celebrate its 30th year with free shoeshines – one per customer – with balloons, free popcorn, pens and magnets, co-owner Lauren Miller said.
“My father-in-law owned it before my husband and I,” Miller said. “My sons, Rob and Dan, work here, too.”
The shop repairs about 30 shoes a day six days a week, 9,360 shoes a year, Gary Miller said.
“We can repair most shoes,” Lauren Miller said. “We can put new straps on any kind of purse. When they have that magnetic snap that pulls out, I can repair that. We can repair flip-flops – if the strap gets pulled out, I can put the strap back in. But the foamy ones don’t hold up too well.”
The repair shop also does orthopedic build-ups to even out the stride of customers whose legs are different lengths.
