GENEVA  – Aldermen Monday unanimously approved a new five-year contract for solid waste service with the lowest bidder, Advanced Disposal Services Solid Waste Midwest, based in Milwaukee but with a local office in Batavia.

The refuse pickup will be sticker-based, similar to the current system, said Public Works Director Dan Dinges.

Begining July 1, the sticker price will be $2.85, $2.98 next year, $3.11, $3.25 and $3.40 in the fifth year.

“We’re excited to lock in a very good price for the next five years,” Dinges said. “The price is going down. It’s $3.18 right now … That is good news these days.”

Although similar to the current plan, Dinges said all the customers will have the option of getting a 35-gallon, 65-gallon or 95-gallon recycling cart at no extra cost.

“It’s a good deal,” he said.

Advanced Disposal acquired Veolia Environmental Services Solid Waste on Nov. 20 for nearly $2 billion, according to a company statement.

The purchase makes the company “the largest privately owned environmental services company in the United States with operations in 20 states and annual revenues of approximately $1.4 billion,” according to the statement.

Republic Services, with local offices in Aurora, currently holds the city’s waste disposal contract. Its bid offered sticker prices ranging from $3 to $3.70.

Groot Industries of West Chicago, Houston-based Waste Management with local offices in Batavia and Flood Brothers Disposal of Oak Brook Terrace did not bid, according to the staff memo recommending Advanced Disposal.
