North boys v'ball inches closer to outright conference crown

The St. Charles North boys volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with Tuesday's 25-15, 25-18 sweep of visiting Geneva.

After winning the crown in 2011, North fell to co-champions Geneva and St. Charles East last spring.

"I feel like last year was a little bit of a letdown, but definitely happy to be back," North Stars senior libero Ryan Dal Degan said. "Not officially yet, but in the driver's seat."

North would clinch the outright title with a win against Streamwood or a Geneva loss to Elgin next week.

Vikings coach K.C. Johnsen said North's energy on its senior night was the difference.

"They made it be a big advantage for them instead of a distraction," he said.

Check out Wednesday's Chronicle for more on the match. A gallery from photojournalist Sandy Bressner already is online here.
