Prep roundup: East baseball blanked by Neuqua Valley

ST. CHARLES – Neuqua Valley right-hander Cody Coll, a Western Kentucky recruit, limited the St. Charles East baseball team to two hits Monday as the Saints lost, 4-0, in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

Brian Sobieski had both hits for the Saints (16-8, 14-5 UEC River), who now hold a half-game lead on idle Batavia (13-5 UEC River) in the conference standings.

“We really just didn’t hit today,” East coach Len Asquini said. “We weren’t very good at the plate today or [Coll] was very good on the mound.”

The Wildcats scored two runs in five innings against the Saints’ Matt Starai, who fell to 6-1. Neuqua Valley added two runs in the sixth, capitalizing on three East errors.

Morris 4, Kaneland 1 (8 inn.): At Morris, Matt Limbrunner drove in a run for Kaneland (10-12, 7-6 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) while pitching 7 2/3 innings. Tyler Bellock added a hit and a run scored.

Burlington Central 6, Richmond-Burton 0: At Richmond, Danny Gerke threw a shutout and Bryan Cynova notched a bases-clearing triple as Central (8-8, 7-2 Big Northern Conference East) nabbed a key conference win.

Aurora Central Catholic 12, Aurora Christian 1 (5 inn.): At Aurora, ACC’s Andrew Bruss improved to 6-2 with five innings of one-run ball, Matt Rahn had three hits and three stolen bases and Matt Miller drove in four runs for the Chargers (23-4, 12-3 Suburban Christian Conference Gold).

Chicago Christian 4, Marmion 3: At Aurora, Alex Troop struck out 10 and allowed one earned run in six innings for Marmion (8-7, 5-4 Suburban Christian Conference Blue). Danny Bicknell had two hits and an RBI.

St. Francis 11, Immaculate Conception Catholic 1 (5 inn.): At Wheaton, Brett Jungles went 2 for 2 with an RBI for St. Francis (14-10, 10-4 SCC Blue). Jason Sullivan was the winning pitcher.

SOFTBALL

Batavia 14, Streamwood 9: At Streamwood, Katie Ryan smacked a grand slam as part of a 3 for 5, five-RBI day. Batavia led, 8-1, after two innings.

Chicago Christian 7, Rosary 1: At Aurora, Emma Molenhouse doubled for Rosary, which led, 1-0, after three innings. The Royals (8-11, 5-6 SCC Blue) were limited to three hits.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Charles North 2, Metea Valley 1: At Aurora, North’s Alex Gage scored off a Jorie Clawson assist and Rachel Michieli scored with assists going to Clawson and Sophie Pohl as North (15-2-1) won the UEC crossover. Shelby Stitz was credited with five saves for the North Stars.

Rosary 4, Marian Central 1: At Aurora, Kaitlin Johnson scored a goal and had an assist while Lauren Frasca made eight saves for Rosary (13-3-3, 8-0 SCC).

BOYS TENNIS

Downers Grove North 5, St. Charles North 3: At Downers Grove, 14-6 North got a 7-6, 3-6 (10-2) victory from Grant Spellman and Keith Hedges at No. 1 doubles.

Geneva 7, Plainfield North 0: At Geneva, Nick Huang, Ryan Doeckel, John Potts and Spencer Ankley yielded a combined three games as Geneva swept singles play.

Marmion 5, Walther Lutheran 0: At Aurora, doubles teams Jackson Rettig and John Graft (No. 1) and Ricky Angsten and Kevin Hoss (No. 2) were among the winners for Marmion (14-0, 7-0 SCC), which secured its fifth straight conference crown.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

BNC Meet: At Genoa-Kingston, Burlington Central tied Byron for first place in the 14-team, weather-delayed meet, with each school finishing with 84 points. Central’s Katie Trupp won the pole vault at 11-0 and came in second in the long jump (15-08 1/2) and high jump (5-04).
