ELBURN – Madison Mientus said she fell in love with acting in sixth grade, when her mom pushed her to audition for the school play, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.”

She got a part, and now the 16-year-old St. Charles North High School sophomore said she is working toward securing a talent agent and, from there, auditions for commercials and films.

Next month, Mientus – who goes by the stage name Madison Rae – plans to travel to California for the International Performing Arts Showcase, where she will audition for multiple talent agents, she said.

To help pay for her airfare and other expenses, including the classes she took through the International Performing Arts Academy, the Elburn teenager has organized a variety show set for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Elburn Community Center, 525 N. Main St., Elburn.

Everyone is welcome to the show, which will feature Mientus and her friends, she said. She said money will be raised through raffle tickets and donation boxes.

“I want to be able to pay back my parents,” Mientus said.

Mientus performed in front of agents last year after taking classes from Actors, Models & Talent for Christ, she said. This year, she took classes from the International Performing Arts Academy.

She has been preparing for the showcase since March, she said. She will have two scenes to play – one from a fictional soap opera and the other from a fictional sitcom.

Being chosen for the showcase was overwhelming, Mientus said. She described it as a confidence boost to be so young and someone thinking you’re good enough.

“It’s pretty awesome,” she said. “I’ve had this dream forever.”
