DeKALB – It took less than a minute for the St. Charles North girls soccer team to set the tone and take control of Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A DeKalb Regional semifinal against DeKalb.
Kelly Manski forced a turnover near DeKalb’s endline and then fed a ball across the face of goal to Alex Gage, who put a one-touch shot away to give the North Stars a lead in the first minute, and North cruised to a 5-1 win.
The North Stars (16-3-1) face West Chicago in the regional final Saturday.
“I love playing another great team because then we come right into playoffs having to play our best, having to fight,” North coach Ruth Vostal said. “We were mentally prepared, physically prepared and I’m proud that they stepped up and scored five great goals.”
North controlled possession for the majority of the match. Ashlyn Walter and Rachel Michieli each scored in the first half to give North a 3-0 halftime lead.
DeKalb didn’t record a shot on goal until late in the second half when the Barbs got on the board with just more than 10 minutes remaining.
IHSA Class 2A Rochelle Regional: Kaneland dominated Illinois Math and Science Academy, 8-0, behind two goals from Brittany Olson and a goal and three assists for Courtney Diddell.
The Knights (11-4-3) advance to face Rosary in Friday’s regional final.
IHSA Class 2A Westminster Christian Regional: Aurora Central Catholic defeated Poplar Grove North Boone, 9-2, in a regional semifinal. Michael Fidler homered and Andrew Bruss (7-3) was the winning pitcher for ACC (26-7), which advances to Saturday’s regional final against the winner of today’s game between Aurora Christian and St. Edward.
St. Charles East 7, Larkin 1: At Elgin, Matt Starai (7-1) threw a complete game for East and Sean Dunne drove in five runs, including a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning, for East (20-10, 17-6 UEC River), which remained a half-game behind first-place Batavia.
St. Charles North 9, Elgin 1: At St. Charles, Ryan Thomas drove in three runs and Ankur Shah notched the win as North won the UEC River game.
Geneva 8, Yorkville 0: At Yorkville, Geneva’s Max Novak threw a complete game, shutout while Bobby Hess (3 for 4, double) and Ben Chally (two doubles, three RBIs) powered the offense for Geneva (18-14).
Marmion 14, IMSA 1: At Aurora, Josh Meyers went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Zach Siwiec had two hits, a walk and scored two runs for Marmion (13-10).
St. Francis 8, Plano 1: At Wheaton, winner Matt Kelly struck out eight in five innings for 17-11 St. Francis, while Andrew Brundage was 2 for 2 with three RBIs.
St. Charles East 7, DeKalb 6: At St. Charles, East (26-5) prevailed behind two RBIs apiece for Kate Peterburs and Sarah Collalti. Alex Latoria (9-1) was the winning pitcher.
St. Francis 8, Rosary 0: At Aurora, Ali Dittrich, Fiona Summers and Maggie Remus each had two hits to lead St. Francis. Rosary falls to 10-16 overall, 7-8 in Suburban Christian Conference play.
Burlington Central 8, Hampshire 1: At Burlington, Brooke Gaylord (four RBIs) and Courtni Neubauer both had three hits to boost Central (25-2). Emily Kisch struck out 12 in seven innings.
Geneva 5-14, Elgin 4-1: At Elgin, Emily Plocinski pitched all 15 innings as Geneva won the marathon first game, while Kirsten Searcy (four RBIs) and Bridget Weitzel each homered as the Vikings (13-15, 7-10 UEC River) took the second game in five innings. Natalie Erbe was the winning pitcher in Game 2.
Geneva 5, Glenbard South 1: At Glen Ellyn, Brad Burgess and Spencer Ankley allowed Geneva to sweep singles play.
