New spring storylines neat to see

Coach Sly's used to seeing big-time success around the area in sports like soccer, softball, baseball and track and field.

This spring, the Tri-Cities area is adding some new feathers in its collective spring cap.

Sly's not sure the last time boys volleyball attracted this much attention in late May around these parts, but the answer is probably never.

St. Charles East and St. Charles North both made it to sectionals, and the North Stars are still kicking. Even Geneva was pretty respectable for a newer program, making it to a regional final.

Congrats to coach Todd Weimer and the North Stars, who are handling the pressure of being the sectional's No. 1 seed like cool customers. We'll see how far the fellas can keep it going.

And let's not forget about boys tennis, another sport that is increasing its stature this Memorial Day weekend.

Jasper Koenen did some big-time work at the state tournament, beating some big-time players from fancy-schmancy schools (yes, fancier-schmancier than St. Charles) along the way.

Making it to the final day of the state tournament is a sensational achievement. Witness: Graduated Batavia star Josh Cogan was an absolute machine, and he never turned the trick during his stellar four-year career.

This ain't like most other sports in Illinois where there's somewhere between 3 and a zillion classes. This is one class, people, meaning Jasper is indisputably one of the very best boys tennis players in the whole state.

Last thought for now, give it up to Aurora Central Catholic for its school year. After the Chargers football team broke its long playoff drought, the baseball and softball teams have both come out of nowhere to make significant postseason runs in the spring.

Way to be, ACC.
