DAVENPORT, Iowa - With just five and a half innings able to be played because of stormy conditions, the Kane County Cougars were defeated by the Quad Cities River Bandits, 7-5, on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.
Teoscar Hernandez led off the bottom of the first by walking against starter Dillon Maples (0-1). Hernandez advanced to second on wild pitch before stealing third and scoring on an error by catcher Willson Contreras. Two batters later, Jonathan Singleton crushed a home run to left-center, putting the River Bandits (28-23) up by two.
Daniel Minor coughed the lead up in the top of the third as David Bote walked before Oliver Zapata reached on a bunt base hit to put the first two men on in the inning for the Cougars (24-26). Pin-Chieh Chen evened the score as he tripled down the right field line to drive in both Bote and Zapata.
Quad Cities reclaimed the advantage in the bottom of the third with RBI singles from Carlos Correa and Singleton. They scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth as Maples walked the bases loaded before exiting the ballgame in favor of Lendy Castillo. Castillo surrendered a two-run double to Correa and a sac fly to Miles Hamblin.
Dan Vogelbach cracked a three-run homer in the fifth off Richard Rodriguez (1-0) to pull the Cougars within two, but they were held silent through the rest of the fifth and the sixth against Lance McCullers (S, 1) before the rain started to pour down.
The Cougars and River Bandits will resume their three-game set on Wednesday night with a 7:00 start at Modern Woodmen Park. Right-hander Pierce Johnson (3-3) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Mike Hauschild (3-0).
