Why she was selected: Beno scored pitching victories against Glenbard West, Conant and Bartlett to send the Saints into Saturday’s 4A St. Charles East Sectional final.
St. Charles East right-hander Haley Beno recovered from an unearned run in the first inning of Tuesday’s 4A STCE Sectional softball semifinal to help the Saints into Saturday’s championship game. Beno continued a season-long surge that saw her play a key role in the Saints’ 18-game winning streak earlier this season, a run that went a long way toward East gaining the top sectional seed. Beno, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, caught up with the Chronicle’s Kevin Druley about her accomplishments. The following is an edited transcript:
What’s been constant for you in the postseason?
I feel like my defense is playing so well behind me. Katie Kolb had, like, amazing catches out there [Tuesday], and that’s nice to know pitching-wise.
Who called the first-inning mound conference to settle things down against Bartlett?
Coach [Kelly Horan] called it. We knew we had to get it together, and we did. I knew that everyone would pick it up.
What have you and teammates said to baseball players about both hosting sectionals this week?
We’re going to go support them [today], so it was nice to see them out here [Tuesday].
