Cut it out: state-bound North boys v'ball opts against mohawks

No more mohawks.

The St. Charles North boys volleyball team called off plans for new state tournament haircuts after coach Todd Weimer consulted with senior captains Ryan Dal Degan, Jonathan Orech and Zach Ziesmer this week.

Weimer initially promised players they could get mohawks if North won a sectional and advanced to Friday's state quarterfinals at Hoffman Estates. With the North Stars eyeing a meeting with Oak Park-River Forest in their state debut, however, plans changed.

"[Weimer] was like, 'You know, if you guys want to, I'm fine with it. But I just feel like we represent a pretty classy school,' " Dal Degan said. "We've been a very respectful program for the four years he's been here, and he'd rather us not. And we respected that. It wasn't a huge deal. It kind of got blown up a little."

North (30-6) held a final practice Thursday before a team dinner. The mohawks didn't figure to be a hot topic.

"We thought it would be, not unsportsmanlike, but we wanted to make sure that we were totally focused on the game," senior right-side hitter Jack Harbaugh said. "Didn't want any distractions. We wanted to have nothing different from what we've been doing throughout the playoffs."
