The Kane County Chronicle selects its All-Area Boys Tennis Team

First Team

Singles

Jasper Koenen

St. Charles East, Jr.

The Chronicle’s Boys Tennis Player of the Year finished a sparkling 33-3 on the season, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the IHSA state tournament. Won the Geneva Sectional single championship after only one loss during regular season.

Justin Bowman

St. Charles East, Sr.

State singles qualifier surpassed 100-win mark for his East career despite battling back problems during the season. A Wisconsin-Whitewater recruit, Bowman placed second to Koenen in singles at Geneva Sectional.

Dominick Amalraj

St. Charles North, Sr.

Upstate Eight Conference River singles champion finished decorated North Stars career with 110 wins. Won a pair of straight-set matches at state tournament.

Doubles

Ryan Doeckel (Jr.)

Nick Huang (Jr.)

Geneva

Doeckel and Huang made a splash at the Geneva Sectional, where they prevailed as doubles champions. Played together part-time as Huang played No. 1 singles for Vikings during mid-week meets. Finished 14-4 as doubles tandem.

John Graft (Jr.)

Jackson Rettig (Sr.)

Marmion

After finishing second at West Aurora Sectional, Graft and Rettig rattled off three straight wins at state tournament after an opening-round loss before falling in fourth round of consolation draw. Rettig earned fourth state berth while Graft juggled tennis and track.

Grant Spellman (Jr.)

St. Charles North

North Stars’ top doubles tandem won Upstate Eight Conference River doubles championship and qualified for the state tournament, where they won a consolation-round match against a team from DeKalb. Placed third at Geneva Sectional.

Nick McCarty (Sr.)

John Potts (Jr.)

Geneva

Surprise state qualifiers picked up their play in the postseason after flying under the radar as Geneva’s No. 2 doubles team. Won a pair of matches in consolation draw at state tournament.

Coach of the year

Guided Saints to repeat championship in Geneva Sectional, where East (18 points) edged crosstown rival St. Charles North (17), Geneva and Lake Park (16 each).

While the Saints were a little lean on the doubles side, singles standouts Koenen and Bowman combined for seven victories at the state tournament.
