Cubs draftee Bryant speaks

The Cubs on Thursday selected University of San Diego third baseman Kris Bryant with the second overall pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

We'll have more in Friday's Chronicle as the Cougars possibly brace for Bryant. Here are a few highlights from Bryant's recently-concluded conference call with reporters:

• Bryant said he can "play in the big leagues now," but will leave the timetable up to Cubs brass.

• Bryant still is in awe of his pre-draft meeting with Cubs president Theo Epstein given Epstein's visibility during Bryant's youth as the general manager who turned the Red Sox around.

"It was just crazy to actually sit down and talk to him face to face," Bryant said. "It's something that I'm definitely going to remember forever."

• Bryant's mother is from Chicago, but he has not been to the city.

• Cubs senior vice president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod also spoke with reporters, but did not offer an immediate timetable on where Bryant might start in the organization. The club must sign Bryant first.

"We think he's advanced," McLeod said. "We think he'll be able to go out and handle the competition right away."
