Group to meet on charter school commission

Published: Friday, June 7, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

ST. CHARLES – Public education activists will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Library, 1 Sixth Ave., St. Charles, to discuss a challenge to the Illinois State Charter Commission.

Hosted by Northern Illinois Jobs With Justice, the meeting is free and open to the public.

The meeting is to consider a campaign to overturn Senate Bill 79, which transferred charter school authorization from the Illinois State Board of Education to the commission itself. Among other things, the law allows the commission to reverse a school board’s decision to deny a charter school proposal.

The meeting is a follow up to a recent attempt by Virtual Learning Solutions, a nonprofit organization that sought charter status from 18 local school districts. The organization would have hired a for-profit company, K12 Inc., to run its virtual online charter schools.

All 18 school districts – including Batavia District 101, Geneva District 304, St. Charles District 303 and Kaneland District 302 – rejected the request from Virtual Learning Solutions.

The agency appealed to the Illinois Charter School Commission. The commission is expected to decide how to proceed, now that Gov. Quinn signed a one-year moratorium on virtual charter schools.
