BATAVIA – Vicki Kostrzewa had her back turned to the TV screen when it was announced that she had just won the grand prize drawing of $20,000 as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Harrah’s Joliet casino.
“One of my friends was looking at the TV screen, and told me,” she said. “That was exciting, to turn around and see my name up there.”
Kostrzewa and a group of friends were attending a barbecue the casino put on as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. She was hoping to win one of the $1,000 cash prizes being given out.
“It’s the biggest thing I ever won,” Kostrzewa said. “It was a real surprise. I just didn’t expect it.”
Kostrzewa and her husband, John, haven’t decided what they will do with the money.
“I put it in my savings account,” she said. “I thought the safest place to put it was my savings account.”
Harrah’s reaffirmed its commitment to the community by also presenting $1,000 donations to 20 Joliet area nonprofit organizations.
“We are committed to sharing our financial success with our community by donating a portion of company profits to charitable causes,” Darren VanDover, Harrah’s senior vice president and general manager. “We also value the diversity and vitality of our community which in turn fuels our dedication to local organizations.”
