District 303 approves deceleration lane cost

Published: Wednesday, June 12, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles school board made no mention of its relationship with the city when it officially agreed Tuesday night to pay for a right-turn lane on Red Gate Road at the entrance of St. Charles North High School.

The $125,000 item was included on the board’s consent agenda, which was unanimously approved without discussion.

The school board agreed to fund the turn lane – also called a deceleration lane – after refusing to share $500,000 in construction costs for intersection improvements with the city of St. Charles.

Some members said the improvements were the city’s responsibility and the city made the mistake of not installing a traffic light when it built Red Gate Bridge, which opened in December.

Several aldermen last week expressed concerns about the school board’s rejection of the original proposed agreement between the two entities. Some indicated it could affect the way the city deals with the school district in the future.

Aldermen, however, recommended approval of the revised agreement. Under the terms, the city will cover about $445,000 of the total $570,000 bill, which includes professional fees and the cost of a traffic light.

The St. Charles City Council has yet to vote on the document.

In other news, the school board approved to place the fiscal 2013-14 budget on public display and to schedule a public hearing on Aug. 12, with final budget adoption planned for that night.

The public may view the final budget at the district’s administration center, 201 S. Seventh St., St. Charles, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning July 1 for at least 30 days. A copy will also be at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

The Business Services Committee is expected to review the final budget June 27.
