Knight Run benefits Kaneland Foundation

MAPLE PARK – When putting together a fundraising run for the Kaneland Foundation, Eric Baron sought an event that would draw participation from several members of local families. He found that in the Knight Run, which will be Friday night at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Friday, with a quarter-mile kids track run. At 7:30 p.m., there will be a mile-long fun run and walk. And at 8 p.m., there will be a 5-kilometer cross country race. The entry fees are $5 for for the quarter-mile, $10 for the mile and $20 for the 5k.

Baron, Kaneland High School's head track coach, said it was encouraging to see participants 6 years old and younger for the quarter-mile.

"My favorite part last year was the little kids running at the very beginning," Baron said.

The race had 125 participants last year, and organizers are hoping for more this year. Baron said the event drew a mix of participants last year – members of the school's track and cross country teams, other youths and parents. He said it is run at night because it's kind of a play on words – the Knight Run. Also, he said, there are no concerns about darkness June 21.

The event will be entirely on the Kaneland campus. The event is billed as "spectator-friendly," with participants finishing on the Kaneland track. The Kaneland Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports students at Kaneland School District 302.
