The Kane County Cougars opened the second half of the season Thursday in similar fashion to the first, losing, 5-3, to the Quad Cities River Bandits.
Playing on April 4 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, the River Bandits won the season opener, 7-2.
On Thursday, Cougars left fielder Oliver Zapata staked Kane County to a 2-0, second-inning lead with a two-run triple to right.
Quad Cities answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half and single runs in the third and fifth against left-hander Brian Smith.
An Albert Almora sacrifice fly in the sixth accounted for the Cougars’ final run.
The Cougars finished 30-36 in the first half, good for sixth place in the eight-team Western Division, 11 games behind first-half champion Beloit.
The four-game series with the River Bandits continues at 7 p.m. today.
