Face Time with Richard Leckbee

St. Charles resident Richard Leckbee, 76, was at the indoor garage sale at Hosanna! Lutheran Church in St. Charles when he answered 11 questions for the Kane County Chronicle’s Brenda Schory.  

Where did you grow up? On a farm in Shelby County, Missouri, about 50 miles west of Quincy

Who would play you in the movie of your life? Tom Selleck

First job? Mowing lawns and working at a furniture repair shop for 50 cents an hour back in the 1950s

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I think I’ve become everything I expected. I served my time in the military, came home, was on highway patrol in Pennsylvania. I’ve been a police officer and in sales ever since. I’m post commander for the St. Charles VFW.

A movie you’d recommend? “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne. Probably the greatest movie ever made.

Favorite charity? Salvation Army

Do you speak another language? A little Korean; a lot less than I used to.

Where did you learn Korean? I spent 171/2 months in Korea during the war. I was in quartermaster dispatch, and we supplied food and clothing and petroleum products to all the forces on the front line in Korea. ... The 121st Evacuation Hospital was in Uijeongbu, three miles from our encampment, and that was the old M.A.S.H. unit.

What game show would you be on? “The Price is Right”

Favorite local restaurant? Colonial in St. Charles

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? I have met a lot of famous people, including Johnny Cash, Tom Selleck, Merle Haggard. I was putting some furniture on the Johnny Cash show, and that’s where I met Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter, and stood and watched Merle Haggard shoot pool right next to the old theater down there.
