D-304 seeks info on all-day kindergarten

GENEVA – Geneva District 304 officials will consider all-day kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year at the earliest, but beginning with a discussion at its July 22 meeting.

Board president Mark Grosso said Monday that he would put it on that agenda to develop a preliminary action plan and see what feedback board members will get from the public.

“It’s very preliminary,” Grosso said. “We’ve had some public interest, letters to the board asking about it. And with our common core curriculum – they don’t mandate it but they lean in that direction. It’s going to be a component of common core eventually. We just want to see what interest there is in our community. We will probably also have a public forum.”

Batavia District 101 and St. Charles District 303 offer all-day kindergarten.

Officials in the past had said all-day kindergarten would be at the parents’ expense, but Grosso would not commit to a plan where the district pays for all of it or just a half day of kindergarten.

“It’s too early to say,” Grosso said. “I want to get feedback from the staff, the rest of the board members and from the community. I just want to put it out there.”
