Elburn gym gets honor, might look to expand

ELBURN – When Danny DeKing opened Pound 4 Pound Fitness in downtown Elburn last year with Ryan Darby, he said expanding to a second location was always a goal.

But DeKing, who also works at the gym as a personal trainer, expected such an accomplishment would take years, not within a year of opening, he said, noting he and Darby have been approached about franchising.

“The last year’s been incredible,” DeKing said Monday evening over the high-energy music that is piped into the black and green gym.

This month, Pound 4 Pound Fitness has another achievement to celebrate: Bodybuilding.com selected it as its gym of the month.

Being recognized by such a reputable publication was a surreal and unexpected experience, DeKing said, noting he has followed the site since he became a trainer.

Visitors to Bodybuilding.com can read a Q&A with Pound 4 Pound Fitness and view photographs of the gym, which offers personal training, boxing and youth boxing classes, boot camps and Don Beebe’s House of Speed athletic performance classes.

Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Pound 4 Pound Fitness boasts about 150 members, including those from communities DeKing didn’t expect to pull from so soon, such as St. Charles and Batavia.

The gym has added several pieces of equipment in the past six months, DeKing said, noting he sometimes feels like it is out of space. But, he said Pound 4 Pound Fitness continues to embrace its small-town vibe and its aim to offer classes and services other gyms don’t.

Those at Pound 4 Pound Fitness pride themselves in getting results, he said, adding a few clients are down more than 100 pounds in a year.

“It’s an accomplishment for the trainer as well,” DeKing said.
