BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – A North Aurora man was killed Thursday afternoon when a car passing him on Nelson Lake Road struck the rear tire of his bicycle, throwing him to the ground, police said.

The bicycle rider, identified as Richard White, 50, of the 1400 block of Fechner Circle, was pronounced dead at Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, according to a release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

White was not wearing a helmet, but he appeared to have been wearing headphones at the time of the crash, police said.

The collision occurred at 2:15 p.m. at the area of Nelson Lake Road south of Main Street in Batavia Township. White was traveling north on Nelson Lake Road near the entrance to Dick Young Forest Preserve. A line of cars also traveling north on Nelson Lake Road swerved to go around the bicycle White was riding on the side of the road, police said. A 2009 Nissan Rogue traveling north failed to go around White and struck the rear tire of the bicycle.

The driver, identified as MaMaxima Corazona Cardino Ty, 26, of the 2100 block of Howard Street, Evanston, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Nelson Lake Road was shut down for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated, police said.

Kane County sheriff’s detectives and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate the crash, police said. The investigation has not determined whether drugs, alcohol or cellphone use were factors.
