A few reader tips have helped land stories in the Kane County Chronicle this month.
It was because of some choice sentences said during a conversation with a source that Chronicle reporter Brenda Schory was prompted to look into the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office and whether there was a backlog of paperwork for DUI and other serious driving offenses not making it to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office as required.
Turns out, a backlog does exist.
That reader tip has lead to four stories and one editorial in the Chronicle since June 18. Brenda continues to explore the issue and plans to write more stories on the topic.
More recently, I picked up a call from a reader wanting to know what “crazy” situation was taking place on Randall Road in Geneva.
It sounded like a traffic incident, and we sent a reporter to the scene.
That tip led to a short news item in Thursday’s paper about a two-car crash with no injuries that had tied up traffic for about 30 minutes.
Whether a tip leads to multiple stories or a brief – or even if it gets filed away as a piece of background information – we appreciate our readers playing a part in the news gathering and reporting process.
The best way to communicate a tip to us is through a phone call or email.
You can direct details to me using the contact information at the end of this column.
Or you can call our main editorial line at 630-845-5355, email our general news mailbox at firstname.lastname@example.org or snail mail us at Kane County Chronicle, 333 N. Randall Road, Suite 2, St. Charles, IL 60174.
Although we encourage those who contact us to identify who they are, we also understand that there are situations where a person may not want to reveal his or her full name.
We can still look into tips that anonymous sources provide, but it may be more difficult for us to discern whether a particular tip is legitimate.
Regardless, the more details a person can provide about a particular incident or development, the better.
