In Focus: Alpaca mania

Published: Friday, June 28, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

The alpacas carefully scanned the newcomers, as spectators ran excitedly to the wire fence for the “Alpacas and Art” event at the Waldron Grove Alpaca Farm in Campton Hills. With their long necks, the miniature, giraffelike animals moved about in the pasture methodically. The alpacas were calm, reserved and vigilant.

A mother with two young children pointed to the smallest member of the herd and explained how the baby alpaca was just like them – young, blissful and curious. The children laughed and reached their hands through the wire mesh, reaching for the furry creature. The two children laughed as the young alpaca romped around the herd. The young alpaca seemed to be searching for an energized playmate with whom to spend the sunny afternoon.
