ST. CHARLES – Those who come out to this weekend’s Firin’ Up the Fox barbecue contest at the Charlestowne Mall will be able to judge for themselves who has the best barbecue.
Today, 37 teams from the Kansas City Barbeque Society will compete for more than $10,000 in prize money. The event will be staged in the parking lot in front of the Carson Pirie Scott store, on the mall’s southeast side.
“It’s just like the ‘BBQ Pitmasters’ television show,” said Julie Farris, executive of the Pride of the Fox Inc., which is putting on the event for the second consecutive year. “They can come and see the competitors cooking.”
From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., those who come out will be able to sample the work and vote for their favorite, Farris said. For a $10 fee, visitors will receive a sample of each participating team’s pulled pork.
The winning team will be announced at the awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m.
On Sunday, there will be an amateurs and Kids Q competition, with an awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
“It was important to Pride of the Fox to make this a community festival as well,” Farris said. “That’s what we are known for.”
Firin’ Up the Fox started last year during the RiverFest event in St. Charles. LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva will receive a portion of the proceeds from the event.
Other activities include a car show and live music. For information, visit www.firinupthefox.com.
