U.S. Rep. Bill Foster issued the following news release:

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, joined labor leaders at the Capitol in calling on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to stop obstructing a vote on the National Labor Relations Board nominees.

Foster was joined by more than 200 House Democrats in sending a letter to McConnell to end the partisan obstruction and allow a vote on the NLRB nominees.

A copy of the letter can be found at https://foster.house.gov/sites/foster.house.gov/files/2013-07-09%20NLRB%20letter.pdf

The NLRB provides critical protections to American workers and provides workers with remedies when they are illegally fired or when their employer refuses to negotiate in good faith. Currently, only three members are sitting on the NLRB, with one member’s term due to expire in August. As a result, the NLRB is at risk of being unable to function and protect American workers and give businesses much needed labor certainty.

Video of Congressman Foster’s speech is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp6PrnzRCvc&feature=youtu.be

Congressman Foster’s full remarks are below:

"First I would like to thank Congresswoman Sanchez and Congressman Courtney for their strong leadership on this issue and to everyone who came out today.

What we have here is a Republican party that lost the presidency, lost the election for the Senate, lost the popular vote for the House, and retains its power to block progress –only through the Gerrymander in the House and the Filibuster in the Senate.

Senator Mitch McConnell is using his threat of the filibuster – not only to try to get his way by refusing a vote on the full package of Board nominees – but also to get rid of fully qualified appointees already serving.

All to promote his anti-working family, anti-labor agenda.

Anyone concerned with the broken politics in Washington needs to look no further than Mitch McConnell's cynical manipulation of the rules and obstruction of the NLRB.

Unfortunately, this is just another example of Republican attempts to use Congress as a political prop.  Instead of working to create jobs and grow our economy, which is still recovering from the recession that Republican policies caused, Republican leadership continues to wage these harmful, partisan battles.

As a businessman, I know that businesses need certainty.

By preventing the NLRB from doing its work, businesses with cases pending before the NLRB won’t get decisions or closure for months, or maybe years because of Sen. McConnell’s and Republicans’ intransigence.

Even more importantly, preventing the NLRB from doing its work creates uncertainty for families.

The NLRB provides important protections to American workers.

We have these protections for a reason – because after years of unsafe working conditions and unfair wages, we decided we could do better.

We should not chip away at the protections that have built the largest economy and the largest middle class in the world.

I urge Senator McConnell to end the partisan obstruction and allow a vote on the full slate of appointees and allow the NLRB to do their job."
